I know a few pilots read this journal...

Looking for a recommendation for self study for the IFR written. When I did my private I used a mixture of the Sportys DVD set, the Rod Machado book, the Gleim test prep book. I think I had a copy of the ASA book too to cross reference against when something didn't make sense in Rod's book.

When I did my FOI and AGI test for my AGI certificate I used a friends Kings CFI dvd's, as well as the FAA books and the Gleim's again. Going back to the earlier books I used for the private when needed.

So I'm not unuse to studying for FAA type tests...

What do YOU recommend as a jumping in point for the IFR written? There are a lot of options out there. Sportys and the Kings dvd sets. Online courses from a variety of providers, books galore.. What do you recommend?

I'd rather study for and get out of the way the written before I do the flight training. That, and I can go ahead and pick up the IGI to add the instrument ground instructor cert at the same time.

If you like Rod Machado, I highly recommend his new IFR book. It's thick, like the private one, but it's very complete. And, like the private book, it covers the actual material, not just the test questions.

For just passing the test, use the Gleim. Memorize the questions, and take the test. This is independent of learning the material.

Thanks, that's all the recommendation I needed!
I'd hoped you'd chime in

I'll get the books on order :)
