It was a beautiful day today...
8am arrives ad I am pulling the Grumman out of the hanger when Kathy arrives. A quick hop to Midway, we walk in and chat with Carol for a few. Walking to the Citabria's hanger Kat and I talk about the plan for the morning. Rolling back the doors and it is time for her introduction to the taildragger. She'll be my first non CFI passenger in the Citabria.
Gamley figuring out how to climb in the back seat we are soon started and ready to go. It's hazy out this morning. We are off behind the 3 T28 Trojans that are based at the field and heading to Ennis. Ennis is a close by field, little to no traffic. A nice short hop to let Kathy get use to riding in the back. Right pattern for runway 15 and I'm soon spooling from base to final and then on a calm wind morning I three point the landing. A bit of a crow hop as I've neglected to get the stick all the way buried in my stomach, the bobble is fixed and we are down and stopped. I check on my passenger again and we are good to go. Power in, rolling I raise the tail and fly her off, we are soon heading to Lancaster for breakfast.
I turn the plane over to Kat in the back. Turns left and right while she figures out the rudder. Being in a tandem plane is different, and she's far behind the CG in her seat. Seat of your pants takes on a new meaning to her. Instruments? Who needs to see instruments to know if you are flying coordinated. She picks out the freeway below from her chart and follows it to LNC. Handing the stick back as she puts me in the downwind, the landing is mine she says.
Another really nice 3 point landing on the windless morning and we are soon parked and heading for breakfast. Afterwards we head back to Midway. Watching Pete as he tows Carol in her glider from the grass on the east side of the runway, they depart the area as we join the pattern. A Skyhawk is on a huge base to final leg, almost to Eagles Nest before he turns, we are slow in the pattern so I call a right 360 for spacing. By the time I'm done with my turn the 172 is now on short final. Much nicer for me as I pull my power and fly to another fairly nice 3 point once more.
We hang out a bit and watch Carol come and go a time or two in her glider and then we are back in Kat's plane getting ready to head to Bourland to visit Mike and Liz. Mike just finished his Texas Sport Cub and it's time to go ooh and ahh and congratulate him as he flies off his 40 hours test flight in her. On Kathy's take off roll I had thumbed the iPod and the theme from 2001 starts as she lifts off and starts her climb out... 200 feet off the runway Carol calls in the downwind once more in her glider, pattern altitude, passing us going the other way as we climb out inside and below her, it was beautiful, awe inspiring.
The visit at Bourland was nice, listening to Mike talk about his first two flights with his new baby. Picking grass from the mains and tailwheel he's been breaking in his tires on a sod field today. The plane is flying nicely, stalls cleanly, no bad habits have turned up so far. A very nice build, Mike and Liz have done a good job. Way to soon it's time to head back home to GPM. Kathy is flying well today in her Grumman, before long we are in the pattern at Grand Prairie and sliding down final.
Flying today in two very different planes. Much fun was had by all parties. Awesome, awe inspiring moments with sharing the air with others. It's hard for flying to get much better than this.

Date: 2008-09-28 03:56 pm (UTC)I have a friend who has a friend there.. and someone took her son up in a an airplane, and mentioned some big gathering of local fliers coming up. Well, this was like a month ago, so it may have already happened. :)

Date: 2008-09-29 03:03 pm (UTC)I've been probably a half a dozen times in the last couple of years. Always fun to see folks I don't see often, often neat planes come in.
So, yes, this month it has already happened. Next month, it'll be on again!
