so I ran across this over on the BBC newsite today
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/technology/3507531.stm
The US military is creating a virtual Earth2 with the help of There. So far the only fully realized city is Kuwait City. The stated purpose is to allow the goverment to practice simulate intelligence work as well as patrols, planning and working with indigenous populations.
Now, the concept of creating a fully realized virtual copy of the planet is pretty cool. Complete down to the streets and buildings in every city. However.. it's the US millitary that's behind it....
So this means that the US Goverment will have a complete virtual map of the world, including cities, streets, buildings, that it'll play it's war-games in.
This seems wrong. I mean, it goes even farther into making soldiers being nothing more than chaff in the minds of the war planners. I mean, they will look at their little virtual world, their virtual campaign and at the virtual death and they'll be even more removed than they already are from the ramifacations of commiting real men to battles.
I have to wonder, in the end, will the military go ahead with RFtagging it's men like it's said it wants to do, and seems to be planning to do with it's supply lines? If they did that, then it's an easy short step for that data to be fed into the virtual world and the military could watch their battles wage in their virtual world...
I mean, it's a cool thing that There think's they can pull it off a complete virtual copy of the earth. It's sad the reason's why they are doing it.
