Not a Turkey - Lesson 59

Out this morning for a quick solo flight before heading to some friends for Thanksgiving dinner. On the way to the airport I get a call from Mischa, the keys are waiting in the plane for me. They THINK they've got the stall warning horn fixed. Give it a try and see what it's like today. Nifty, my original plan for the flight today has already been scrubbed. I had to take care of some things around the house early this morning so not enough time to do what I planned.
Out to GKY and I see Mischa with another student in the 182 getting ready to head up. He waves as I walk to the plane. A preflight is done, and I'm sitting in the plane starting it up. Canopy closed and I'm talking to the tower for taxi. 16 is the runway of choice today, 11 knots out of 17, within my allowable. Run up is completed after I spin the Cheetah in beside Mischa in the 182. He grins at me as they taxi out and wait for takeoff.
A bit of a line this morning, I'm number 3 for take off but the tower gets us out pretty fast. I'm cleared for my south west pattern departure and for take off. Out I roll onto the runway and do a soft field take off. These really need more work. I'm not very happy with them at all. Short field I've got down, soft field, never feel right. Something to work on tomorrow with Mischa.
Out of the pattern and I head for the practice area. I do some clearing turns and then roll into a steep turn to the right. Not bad, make a better note of the heading I roll into it next time. I roll out and into one to the left. Pretty good. They aren't perfect, but they appear to be within PTS standards. I roll out and start to think about some slow flight until I see a skyhawk just above me crossing to the east. He looks like he's out for some practice too today, he's descending. I adjust my course and head a bit further west from where he's starting to play and then I'm ready.
Another quick turn to the left, then right to make sure nobody is lurking about and I'm pulling the power back for slow flight, running in the flaps I hold my altitude. The stall warning horn comes on. Man, is that annoying. Turns to the left, to a heading, back to the right to another heading, I play a bit in the slow flight. Stablize in level flight, then pitch it for a stall. The horn gets more annoying and then she starts to shudder. Nose over, power in smoothly, bring it back up and milk out the flaps. Not bad. I do another, and then one more. Now I set up for some power on stalls. These always seem to end up with me gaining a fair bit of altitude by the end. I'll go over them once or twice with Mischa tomorrow too, just to tighten them up.
I do a few more steep turns, a bit more slow flight, just playing along the way. It's a nice day to fly this Thanksgiving. A bit hazy, but the air is smooth. The tree's are awfully pretty today. Time to head back to Arlington, out over the lake, then over the Marina and I call the tower. Report abeam the tower on downwind.
I drop to 1700 feet and turn into the pattern, calling the tower and I'm cleared #1 for the landing, touch and go. Power out at the 1000 foot bars, fuel pump on, landing light, and I pitch for 80, turn the base, and motor on for a while, turn my final and work the centerline. No flaps but I still roll it on before the 1000 foot bars. Power in and I'm rolling for takeoff. Rotate, and pitch for VX. 70 knot climb and I'm over my 50 foot or greater obstacle and I hold it for a moment longer. The Cheetah will really climb with half tanks and only one occupant. Transition to VY at 80 knots and I'm just grinning. The tower calls, make left traffic now. He's got a 172 in the right pattern. He sounds amused that it's me again climbing like there's no tomorrow.
I call abeam the tower again as requested, letting him know I want a full stop one because I'd just heard him report the wind to the 172 as 11, gusting 18. It's getting late anyway, and I have to be at a friends for turkey soon. Cleared to land 16 full stop. I pull the power at the bars, turn a bit earlier and work in some flaps. Base to final and I've just now added the last of the flaps and it's looking to be a really nice soft field landing. The centerline is held fairly nicely, flaring just at the numbers the speed bleeds fast with all those flaps and I'm rolling rolling between the numbers and the bars, nose held up as I slow, then settles it down, running up the flaps I make the second taxiway. The tower tells me to taxi to parking with him.
Parked and shut down I have to smile while I fill out the book. A few things to work on, but all in all, a satisfying short flight today.
