I got hung up at the office.. so got back to Arlington late. Then traffic through town was tied up because of construction. I got to the airport almost 30 minutes late... then we found that 508 was out for an oil change.. The plane hadn't flown all day, but they picked 5 o'clock to do the oil change. so we ended up taking 501 instead.

It ended up a good lesson though. My CFI wanted to start working on landings tonight. There was no one around GKY tonight, everyone had been scared off by the possible weather changes. So we had a nice crosswind, 10 knots almost directly across runway 16.

The first couple we tried setting up and flying a crab to the runway and then pulling it out and dropping the wing into the wind and flare. After 2 of those, I was just not getting the aileron inputs right. So we flew another one where he took care of the rudders and I flew the top end with the ailerons. That reduced the workload and it all of a sudden made a LOT more sense to me. Then he suggested we change our approach and try flying the next ones with a forward slip all the way down final. That way I was already holding the rudder and aileron inputs correctly all the way down. That seemed to work a lot better for me. I still was pretty dead on the rudders once I got into the flair, and I kept dropping out the aileron roll. I was advised that power slides were NOT what one wanted on a landing. ;)

On our next to the last landing we were climbing out from the touch-n-go and a Connie called on overflying the field to join on downwind. I looked up and to the right just as they approached and flew over us as we were climbing out. They were a good ways from us and above us so there was no danger, but gosh, wasn't it pretty to see. :D

Our last time around the patch was only slightly better than the others. I still was dropping out the right aileron which tends to run me towards the edge of the runway. (sigh) But, all in all, a good lesson. Lots of room for improvement eh?
